Headaches are a common issue that many people experience. While there are various causes for headaches, paracetamol is frequently chosen to alleviate the discomfort.

Paracetamol is known to effectively relieve mild to moderate headaches and other types of pain. However, it’s essential to use it properly to ensure safety and effectiveness.

What is Paracetamol?

Paracetamol, or acetaminophen, is a pain reliever and fever reducer that’s widely available over the counter, requiring no prescription. It works by reducing the production of prostaglandins, chemicals in the brain responsible for pain and inflammation.

Compared to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, paracetamol presents a lower risk of digestive side effects, making it a safer choice for those with sensitive stomachs.

Before taking paracetamol, it’s crucial to understand the appropriate dosage based on age and health condition.

Typical paracetamol dosage guidelines include:

  • Adults: 500–1000 mg every 4–6 hours, not exceeding 4,000 mg within 24 hours.
  • Children: It’s best to consult a pediatrician or follow the directions on the packaging. For younger children, dosage should be adjusted according to age and weight.

Guidelines for Taking Paracetamol Safely

To maximize safety and effectiveness when using paracetamol, keep the following guidelines in mind:

  • Be aware of other medications you’re taking, and avoid combining them haphazardly. Many over-the-counter cold or flu medications also contain paracetamol as an active ingredient. Ensure the total daily dose of paracetamol doesn’t exceed the recommended limit if you’re using multiple medications.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking paracetamol, as this can increase the risk of liver damage.
  • If you have specific health conditions like liver or kidney disorders, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult a healthcare provider before using paracetamol.
  • Taking paracetamol with a full glass of water aids in its absorption. Avoid pairing it with caffeinated drinks like tea, coffee, or soda, which can stimulate stomach acid production.

When Should You Consult a Doctor?

Overuse of paracetamol can lead to liver damage. Seek medical advice if you notice signs of an overdose, such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes).

If your headache persists despite taking the recommended dose of paracetamol, consider consulting a doctor promptly. Persistent headaches may signal more serious issues, such as migraines or high blood pressure.

For added convenience, you can also access healthcare consultations through the Ai Care app, available on the App Store and Play Store.
